RETS Electronics School was founded in 1958 to provide theoretical and practical training in electronics. During the early years, most graduates were employed in the radio and television field. In the late 1960s and 1970s, training was geared toward preparing students for employment in other emerging electronics industries such as communications, computers, bio-medical, computer networking, fiber optics, and consumer electronics.

In December 1990, the School changed its name from RETS Electronics School to RETS Technical Center.

By 1996, training expanded into the fields of refrigeration, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (RHVAC). In 2000, the School further expanded its technical programs with the introduction of a comprehensive Medical Assistant training program.

In December 2002, the School was acquired by Quest Education Corporation, a subsidiary of Kaplan, Inc., which subsequently changed its name to Kaplan Higher Education Corporation. Kaplan is dedicated to continuing the same excellent education for which RETS Technical Center is known. In November of 2008, RETS Technical Center changed its name to Kaplan Career Institute.
